Toasting Flutes - Choosing and Using
By Kathleen Ball
The ceremony is over and you are now Husband and Wife. You have been witnessed as you pledged your love and faith to each other and now is the gathering of friends and family to celebrate the beginning of your new life together. When the guests are seated at the reception or have gathered at tables, the best man clinks his champagne glass for silence--the time for toasting has begun.
To commemorate this first drink together as husband and wife, special toasting flutes were created. Here are the different styles you can choose from:
1. Lead crystal, or glass: You can pick either a 24% lead crystal style flute or a simple glass flute or goblet. These flutes can then be personalized or adorned. If you choose personalizing, it is usually with the first names and date of the wedding or a monogram. If you choose adornment, these are usually satin, ribbon or twine accents tied on to the stem. So for example, you might have a satin rose, or ribbon that matches your wedding colors, or twine with shells for a beach motive. You can also choose to have a cross embedded in a ribbon bow to remind you of the faith you share.
2. Metal flutes: You can pick either a silver, silver-plated, pewter or silver metal flute or goblet. Be aware that most silver or silver-plated flutes will need polishing over time. Most metal flutes can also be personalized with your first names and wedding date or monogram. The beauty and simplicity of metal flutes make them a very popular choice.
3. Combination metal and glass: For an unusual look, you can choose to have a metal stem with a glass flute. Often times, there is a decoration where the stem and glass meet. There are also more modern styles where the stem is molded into a shape, or letters. For example, two glasses that when put together the stems form a heart. Or glasses where the stem is molded to spell out the word: LOVE.
Whichever one you choose, your toasting flutes are important accessories for you. You use them to take your first drink as a married couple and to give and receive blessings and good wishes from each other, your family and your friends. This makes them very powerful reminders of a wonderful occasion--don't just pack them away. I recommend that you use them on at least two occasions a year. The first and most important is your anniversary. Plan to have a toast together every year by spending some time reviewing your year as a married couple. How did you grow? What were the high points, the low? What do you want to pledge to each other this year? Use your toasting flutes to remind and renew your love for each other. The second occasion is Valentines Day. This is a special day for lovers and what better way to remind you of your love than your toasting flutes?
So choose a toasting flute that you can use over time. In our busy lives, it is important to take a moment and remember this important day --your flutes will help you.
